ReplyDelete+ Pros: Excellent footprint, surprisingly flexible configuration options. 'Cool tech' appeal, very low-cost, simple to use.
- Cons: Due to the compact antenna-free design, The wireless range on this device is very limited. (Just stating the obvious.)
Purchased this device to use as a destination AP for testing functionality and sensitivity of prototype directional antennas operating from 2.412 Ghz to 2.484 Ghz. (standard wifi frequencies). To this end, the device serves its purpose.
Other notes:
Presently the printed and online device documentation fails to mention power draw.
- When idle (no clients connected, no ethernet connected) it consumes roughly 200 mAh.
- When under load (Ethernet & multiple wireless clients connected) it consumes around 500 mAh.
The Quick Start documentation gives instruction for Android and IOS devices, in which it directs users to install the "Netshair Nano" app. Technically this is not required. The device has a simple web UI and can be fully configured just by using your Android/IOS web browser.
- Quick Start document Steps 12 onward essentially describe doing this.
The device arrived with firmware version VDARx1-324.0.100 (I think). A quick visit to IOGear's website and I was able to get the firmware updated to VDARx1-324.0.104 (which was a very simple process using the Web UI and my smartphone.) Instructions are included with firmware download.
