I would like to offer a suggestion for the Pi-Star software. I believe this is something that would benefit more hams than just myself, especially Net Control operators.

Concerning the Gateway Activity screen. Is it possible to have a configuration setting to allow the user to set more than 20 rows of activity. Displaying a vertical scroll bar on the right to go back and retrieve calls that have rolled off the screen? On the left side of the row, the number of rows desired would be set in the cofiguration menu. There is plenty of room on the left where the time is displayed to number each row so you can scroll backwards to look at any call signs that were missed because of the roll off.

With its dimensions of 57 mm by 34 mm by 11 mm you can call Daniu's DSO188 a matchbox oscilloscope. If you think this device is nothing more than a funny, but useless toy you are wrong. It allows you to observe signals up to 100 kHz. W

Anyone looking for a low cost scope to trouble shoot (a least audio and low frequency such as encoders) parts of their UBitx, these little oscilloscopes were on sale. I bought one. It only has a 1 Mhz bandwidth, but that is better than the 200 Khz bandwidth on many of the other cheap tiny scopes.

I bought an MFJ-259C a few years ago. Cost me about $550. It’s ok but a bit poor quality. Rig Expert are better for sure, but I wouldn’t buy a conventional antenna analyzer any more. The Nano VNA is the way to go and dirt cheap. Like US$50. There’s one with a larger screen now too for a bit more that’s worth the extra money in my opinion.

There was a detailed review in QST in one of the recent issues (last three months – I forget which one).

They tested it and found it as good as ones 10x the price.

Motorola SL7550 MotoTrbo Radio

I've enjoyed using it like no other HAM Digital (Icom DStar or Yaesu Digital)

This radio is a bit different than most Motorola products as it doesn't take a special programming cable. Just a micro USB to USB cable will let you program. That is also how the radio charges. It programs with the standard Trbo CPS. Antenna is the 438-470mhz unit.

  • SMS with xT9 (normal T9)
  • Search in the address book and zone/channel lists

Cons
  • If you replace the battery with a different size (mAh) you also need to change the battery cover
  • No support for external antenna
  • Roaming list are a bit on the short side (15 channels)
  • No front panel programming (change channel settings on the radio)
  • Custom jack for external speaker/mic
  • PTT button needs a bit to much force to press
  • High priced
